What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is the expression of a seed that lies within the hearts, bodies, and souls of African people who were suppressed, forced into slavery, dehumanized, and brought to Brazil to work on cotton and sugarcane fields, among others.

Under lashings, diseases, misery, and trauma this seed slowly grew into an art of resistance—a means to communicate, to preserve ancient traditions, and to defend oneself against oppressors.

It plays an integral role in Afro-Brazilian culture, bringing forth rhythm, movement, and wisdom.

As an Afropean, Capoeira is more than just a sport to me. It is a channel to reconnect with my roots and ancestors. Throughout my life, I have always felt outcast and different because of my outer appearance and skin color. This art has given me the ability to bridge my African heritage with Western society and to take pride in my lineage.

Capoeira is for everyone who is willing to respect the history, tradition and the culture and to preserve decades of wisdom.
